What things should I consider with oxio’s higher internet speeds?
To get the most out of your oxio internet plan, especially if you have speeds over 500 Mbps, we recommend hardwiring your devices directly to the router. While our provided routers can deliver great Wi-Fi speeds of 400-500 Mbps (perfect for most homes), Wi-Fi is still susceptible to interference.
For the most stable and fast connection, a hardwired device can achieve speeds up to 1 Gbps. Need more ports? An ethernet switch is a great way to expand your network and share the full speeds with multiple wired devices.
Wi-Fi vs wired.
When it comes down to it, a wired connection is always better.
Here's why:
⚡ Dedicated bandwidth - Supports higher data transfer, ensuring you get the maximum speed based on your internet plan.
🕹️ Reduced latency - AKA the amount of time it takes for data to travel from your device to its destination and back. Game-changer for competitive online gaming and video conferencing.
🗿 Rock-solid stability - Wi-Fi signals are prone to interference from things like the physical layout of your home to other electronic devices and metal objects. With a physical cable, these issues are almost non-existent.
But, we understand this isn’t always feasible in every household. Cables running all over the house isn’t exactly ideal. While we can’t guarantee specific Wi-Fi speeds as everyone’s housing situation is different, your devices don’t actually require as much bandwidth as you might think for everyday use cases.
A lot of providers like advertising that the highest speed is always the best, but in reality, most things we do day to day don’t require a lot of bandwidth at all! As an example, streaming HD content takes 5 to 10 Mbps. Having a video call with someone is about 5 Mbps, and streaming Spotify music is not even 1 Mbps! So even if you did all three at the same time (guilty), you would only really consume up to 16 Mbps of your bandwidth.
What are the advantages of a higher speed internet plan?
Having an internet plan with download speeds over 500 Mbps still definitely has its perks when set up correctly using wired connections.
✅ 14-25 devices seamlessly on your network at the same time.
✅ Streaming in 4K + competitive online gaming on multiple devices.
✅ Downloads done faster, so you can get straight to the fun part.
How to take advantage of a higher speed internet plan.
👇 Here’s your gear checklist and some quick tips:
- Ensure you have a compatible modem.
- Hitron Coda-45
- Hitron-Coda-4589
- Sercomm DM1000
- Gemtek GT-DUO31
- AccessPoint CBN CD8000
Not sure which modem you have, or don’t see yours on the list?

- If you want to take advantage of a wired connection, we recommend getting an ethernet switch. These can be purchased online or from your local tech/hardware store.
Correct order to connect these:
Modem > Router > Ethernet switch.
Connecting the switch directly to the modem can cause disconnections.
Your provided router will have 1 extra available ethernet port to hardwire a device. If you plan on connecting more than 1 device over a wired connection, an ethernet switch connected directly to your router will allow you to have multiple devices hardwired at the same time.
Just make sure the ethernet cable(s) is of cat5e technology or greater (this will be printed on the cable) to support speeds up to 1 Gbps.
- If you want to take advantage of Wi-Fi connections, first make sure your router placement is optimal by keeping it out in the open and away from other electronic devices, metals, and even mirrors.
Is an optimal spot just out reach? Try using a longer ethernet cable (of cat5e technology or greater) to connect between your router and modem.
If you’re looking to expand Wi-Fi coverage in your home so devices get the best possible wireless connection, consider adding additional routers to your plan. 1 router is typically good for coverage up to 1500 sq ft. We can hook you up for only $6/mo per additional router (up to a maximum of 3).
